Shortly after Calvin Trillin’s memoir “About Alice” was published  in 2007, it was adapted by the author for a two-character play. Trillin, a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine, wrote movingly about his late wife Alice in several books and essays.  At the suggestion of TFANA artistic director Jeffrey Horowitz who knew Alice when she was making an educational series on PBS, the work on the play “About Alice” continued for some time culminating in this theatrical run at TFANA.

The genuine performance by Jeffrey Bean as Calvin Trillin and Carrie Paff as Alice tell a touching story of how they met at a party, fell in love, and kept the precious light of their love burning for many years. It is telling that when a shorter version of the memoir “Alice, Off the Page” appeared in The New Yorker, people who did not know Alice personally kept writing to Mr. Trillin about their fascination with his wife’s cheerful nature, happiness with the world around her, and a sense of wholeness. An inspiring musical performed by talented actors makes an exciting and enlightening debut at a welcoming Off-Off-Broadway Theater at the Abrons Arts Center. The book by Dick Scanlan about Edna St. Vincent Millay and her family is set to the lyrical and touching music score by Carmel Dean. The lyrics by Edna Millay are at the core of the musical convoluting the storyline and elevating its tensions at the same time.

With poetry being at the center at Millay’s family life, sisters and mother included, it brings refreshing vibes for the modern audience. And while the century that separates us from Millay’s time seems to lessen the public’s interest in poetry, the problems facing young poetess and women back then stay unchanged. Two world famous theaters combine their forces to produce a dynamic and powerful play by Shakespeare which seems to be written about our fast-paced time. Or it could well be that no matter what time it is, people and the interplay of their motives stay the same.

Shakespeare, the great master of human soul and its hidden desires, had placed the story in the space close to his, and the brilliance of Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod is in shifting it to the modern time while keeping the story intact. The amazing thing is the fresh potency of the story that explores corruption, hypocrisy, and lies of those in power and the tight strings at their disposal to turn the world around in tune with their wishes. Opened in 2013 in Moscow, Russia, this “Measure for Measure” production had already traveled around the world getting rave reviews in Spain, France, Britain, and many other countries.
