World-renowned glass sculpture artist Dale Chihuly returns to New York Botanical Garden with his new installation CHIHULY. The exhibition includes 20 works combining early drawings and the latest creations.

Dale Chihuly’s art blends easily with the nature, so this year installation at the NYBG is not the first experiment in that regard. The New Botanical Garden gives these innovative art works a genuine environment. In an interview with the ArtNet Todd Forrest, the NYBG’s vice president for horticulture and living collections stressed that “the combination of art and nature that exemplifies Dale Chihuly’s art is something that is very close to our hearts at the New York Botanical Garden.”

Chihuly came a long way in reaching the level of expression he is presenting to the public today. After years of studies and work at the top art schools in the US, he studied glass blowing at the Venini factory on the island of Murano off Venice, Italy. There and elsewhere in Europe he was able to experiment with the techniques, colors and materials that now make integral parts of his installations.

The exhibition at the NYBG is highlighting the interplay not only between the glass creations and the nature but also between daylight and nighttime illumination. The garden will open late for the visitors to experience this magic. Check the hours here.

In addition to the art and nature there will be summer concerts in the garden. The opening concert in the series on Friday June 16, 2017, the French Connection, is featuring vocal sensation Camille Bertault and Alphonso Horne on trumpet.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF JAZZ

The collaboration between  New York Botanical Garden and Catskilll Jazz Factory brings the summer concert program Jazz & CHIHULY  to the scenic Conservatory lawn of the garden. The second concert in the series is a celebration of 100 years of American Jazz from it’s folk roots to such american classics like Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith. The program brings together bandleader Chris Washburne on trombone, Brazilian pianist Andre Mehmari , vocalist Brianna Thomas and friends.

The concert series are part of elaborate program around the CHIHULY glass sculpture exhibition on the grounds of New York Botanical Garden. 20 works are spread-out on over 250 acres, including artist’s early drawings and more recent creations. This is the second collaboration between Dale Chihuly and NYBG as his art naturally blends in with the nature and seems to be destined to be exhibited at NYBG. The first exhibition was held in 2006 attracting 350,000 visitors.

Chihuly stresses the uniqueness of glass as the only material that lets the light through. In his works he capitalizes on this property of the material. With that in mind, garden environment is an ideal showroom for seeing Chihuly’s works as it gives viewers a chance to see the changes in light and its reflection in the ponds depending on time of day. Playing on this notion, the nighttime illumination adds some magic to the works. The garden will be open late for the visitors to experience it.

The concertgoers will have a chance to view CHIHULY exhibition in daylight and with the nighttime illumination after the performance.
