Piaf! The Show was conceived and produced by Gil Marsalla, a Nice-based music director, who in 2014 invited Anne Carrere, a talented chanteuse, and actress, to perform in the show about the legendary French star. Carrere’s passionate interpretation of the songs from Edith Piaf’s repertoire takes the audience back in time to the streets of Montmartre following the rags-to-riches tale delivered with utmost grace. The archival images and footage recreate the moody scenes from Piaf’s tenuous beginnings as a street singer. The sequence of songs follows the life story with all its ups and downs all the way to Piaf’s days of fame when she was performing in the famous concert halls in Europe and America. The Guardian review of the show after the performance in London notes Carrere’s rendition of Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien as “a devastatingly effective closer”.
Marsalla confesses that the discovery of Carrere was the biggest success of his career. Her vibrant and soaring voice, gentle acting and affectionate improvisations made the show an international sensation. The performance at Carnegie Hall in January 2017 on the 60th anniversary of Piaf’s appearance at the iconic venue was a sold-out highlight of the 2017 season tour and had brought a standing ovation from the audience.
The spectacle is presented in two 45 minute long parts and includes 28 songs accompanied by the archival image projections. The top-notch musicians in the cast have their own say playing with a superb class and a deeply felt warmth. And for those in the audience who don’t understand French, the music serves as an ample translator of emotions. With the sold-out houses in 30 countries around the world Piaf! The Show will surely delight the New York audience this year again.
