An acoustic guitar duo from Mexico, Rodrigo Y Gabriela is coming to New York City on its Mettavolution Tour with the most ambitious new music; only one concert at the Beacon Theater on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 8 pm

Guitar virtuosos Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero, known internationally as Rodrigo Y Gabriela, are embarking on a North America Mettavolution tour with a stop in New York City at the Beacon Theater. The duo’s deep sound and maddening technique is admired by fans and highly praised by critics.

The Mettavolution tour coincides with a release of the new album with the same title which is scheduled to be out on April 26, 2019. The group spent five years preparing for the album release. Over this five-year period their style evolved and allowed them to make, what they call, “the most ambitious” music. It now combines duo’s long-standing love for the classic rock style with the newly acquired interest in Buddhism, so that the Buddhist chant rhythm and philosophy are now added into the compositions.

Rodrigo Sanchez (born 1974) and Gabriela Quintero (born 1973) grew up in Mexico City, Mexico. From the age of 15,  they started experimenting with playing together first as a heavy metal group in their native Mexico City and later abroad. Moving to Dublin, Ireland in the late 1990s made them search for their unique place on a crowded music scene. With Spanish the only language they spoke at the time, they and their music stood out among the predominantly English-speaking musicians. In a way, their path to find their place is similar to other rock legends in gaining popularity abroad first while enriching their repertoire and honing their unique style.

The duo’s first well-noted album “Rodrigo Y Gabriela” was released in 2006 reaching the top spot on the charts in Ireland. That recording was followed with another well-received one in 2009 “11:11”. Also in 2006, the duo debuted on American TV performing in Late Night with David Letterman. More TV appearances on MTV and in a “Breaking Bad” episode followed in 2008. They even performed for the Obamas at the White House in 2010.

Rodrigo and Gabriela list Metallica as their main influence as well as flamenco, jazz, and classic rock. Traveling around the world helped them develop their own eclectic style that mixes everything from Gypsy Kings to the middle-eastern and south-asian  harmonies. The New York Times review points out that the duo is “known as much for its eclecticism as for the frantic full sound”. Their fast and furious technique of guitar playing is legendary.

Their latest album Mettavolution which took five years to conceive and three years to produce is the most ambitious. In a bold move, it features a reimagined Pink Floyd’s masterpiece “Echoes” from 1971. Rodrigo Y Gabriela’s rendition juxtaposes the original melody with the harmonies of Buddhist chants, the rhythms of flamenco music, and a variety of other styles. The result is a complex and beautiful track with the contemplative moments and the swirls of sound. NPR review notes that “it only gets better and more breathtaking the deeper you get into the track”. The album makes a call for the interconnectedness of music tradition in a globalized world.
