In celebration of Women’s Month, GetClassical and Ekstasis Duo present Women’s Voices, a program of music that was written by female composers. Positioned in loose chronological order, the program starts with the mid-19th century works by Louise Farrenc and Clara Schumann which are followed by the contemporary classical scores by Judith Taafe Zwilich and Lera Auerbach. A jazzy arrangement for piano and cello by Kaufman as an hommage to Nina Simone tops the night.

A recently formed Ekstasis Duo of musicians, Eliran Avny, piano, and Natasha Farny, cello combine their passion and dexterity for this exciting music night at the Revelation Gallery at St. John’s in the Village Church in New York City. Graduates of the Julliard School of Music, Avni and Farny artistic partnership brings the lesser-known music and the masterpieces to the wider public. The program at the GetClassical recital on March 17, 2020 successfully underscores this mission.

Praised as possessing both “ironclad technique” and “ample suppleness” by The New York Times, Eliran Avni is an emerging force in the contemporary classical music scene. Hailed as “The new hope of Israeli music” by Ma’ariv, he made his debut with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Zubin Mehta at age 17. Since then, he has appeared as a soloist and chamber music collaborator throughout Europe, North and South America, as well as in his native Israel, and has played for live broadcasts for the Israeli and German broadcasting systems.

As a soloist, Avni is known as a preeminent interpreter of the music of composer Avner Dorman. Solo performance highlights include Dorman’s Azerbaijani Dance with the Israel Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta at Carnegie Hall, Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto with the Alabama Symphony, and the Grieg Concerto with the Oakland East Bay Symphony.

A charismatic lecturer and teacher, Avni has presented master classes and lectures on the connection between music and emotion in both the United States and Israel, and has taught at prestigious institutions such as The Juilliard School and the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival. Avon began his musical training at the Tel Aviv Academy with Marina Bondarenko, Eliran won first prize in both the Clairmont and Rachmaninoff Competitions at the age of 16. From 1989-2000, he was an annual scholarship recipient of the Israel-America Cultural Foundation. Dr. Avni received both his BM and MM degrees while studying with Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky at The Juilliard School and completed his DMA degree as a student of both Dr. Kaplinsky and Jerome Lowenthal. Avni is currently a member of the Ekstasis Duo with cellist Natasha Farny and a piano faculty member at SUNY Freodnia.

This season, her duo Ekstasis will perform at Merkin Hall, Bard College, and Saugerties Pro Musica. She has been appointed to numerous summer festivals including the Sewanee Music Festival, the Brancaleoni International Music Festival, the National Music Festival (MD), and the Colorado Music Festival and during the year, teaches at the School of Music at SUNY Fredonia.

The event is presented by Ilona Oltuski at GetClassical. Inspired by the success of Rhapsody in School, a popular program that introduces classical music and musicians to school students in Germany, GetClassical in School aims to share the joy and spark the love of classical music amongst school children in New York City. To do that, the musicians participating in the program are visiting city classrooms and bringing with them the gift of classical music to students. The initiative is supported by the Foundation For The Revival of Classical Culture, Naxos of America, Inc., among other organizations. Building on the momentum of an ongoing relationship with schools, it would like to introduce a variety of instruments and performers and to invite kids to the full-length concerts. GetClassical in School and its artists believe in the importance of bringing their passion for classical music into kids‘ lives – one note at a time.
