Mozart inspired program featuring exhilarating music for piano and violin at Zankel Hall on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 3 pm

American piano virtuoso Jeremy Denk doesn’t need an elaborate introduction as his lyrical and exacting style and an exquisite taste in program selection earned him high accolades from the critics and a faithful following by the fans. His genuine performing style calls for an equally well-attuned play by his partners on stage. So it is not surprising that for this Carnegie Hall appearance Denk invited his friends the violinists who can match in virtuosity when playing “mature” Mozart sonatas for piano and violin together with the music by Handel, Ravel, Stravinsky, Adams and others.

Mozart, who was known for his brilliant command of the piano and the violin, had written the sonatas included in this program when he was still employed in Salzburg. While the sonatas from his early period have the violin in the lead, the more mature pieces call for an even-handed treatment of the instruments. The intertwined parts of the scores don’t delineate for a solo and an accompaniment role but create a wholesome arrangement. That is the main idea behind this carefully curated musical holiday present to every music lover.

Beyond NYC: Sparkill Concert Series in Memory of a Great Artist

Presented by Sparkill Concert Series and GetClassical, “In Memory of a Great Artist” an all Tchaikovsky program is a wonderful holiday treat for music lovers. The program features pianist Vassily Primakov, violinist Filip Pogády, cellist Yves Dharamraj, and guest artists, Oxana Mikhailoff and Asiya Korepanova. Korepanova will also display her original artwork – a collection of 18 drawings – inspired by the pieces that make up Tchaikovsky’s Op.72.

While no-one can imagine Winter Holiday time without the eternal music from the Nutcracker, the rest of the program is a thought-provoking and serious compositions perfectly fitting for the concert in memory a beloved composer. The truly international group of musicians assembled for this concert is a testimony of the universal power of great music and of Tchaikovsky’s enormous contribution to this art genre.

Music in NYC: Anna Netrebko in Carnegie Hall Recital

Dazzling Russian soprano Anna Netrebko accompanied by Malcolm Martineau on piano performs a program by Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at 2 pm

Since successfully debuting on the opera stage of Mariinsky Theater in Saint-Peterburg, Russia in the early 1990s, Anna Netrebko’s star has risen earning her high acclaim and faithful following from the classical music lovers. Netrebko’s radiant voice and tremendously sensuous acting of each and every role she chooses are highly anticipated musical events around the world.

A recital at Carnegie Hall with a distinguished pianist Malcolm Martineau brings the deeply emotional scores by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and other romantic masters to the audience of consummate fans who will not settle for just another concert. Opera in NYC: Mefistofele at the Met Opera

Splendid and colorfully rich production of Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele at the Met Opera until December 1, 2018

A revival of Robert Carsen’s the 1999 production of Boito’s Mefistofele brings all the elements of grand opera to the Met Opera stage. Omnipresent and vicious devil whistling and steering havoc, magnificent chorus scenes mightily delivered by the members of Met chorus and ballet, vibrant costumes and powerful singing are all in evidence throughout the performance.

Regarded as a showpiece for basses with Samuel Ramey famously singing Mefistofele with all the demonic charisma in place, Christian Van Horn, a bass-baritone, commands a formidable presence. Faust, his counterpart, played by young tenor Michael Fabiano, is reasonably sensual if restrained at times. Yet, both make an impressive leading pair going through all the ups and downs of Boito’s illustrious masterpiece.

The set and costume design by Michael Levine adds a strong visual component to the production and sometimes competes for attention with the music and the main characters. With sensitive and penetrating soprano Angela Meade as Margherita and Carlo Rizzi conducting, the opera is a fantastic treat for the spectators reminding us of vices and virtues in a truly theatrical way.

Theater in NYC: Musical Drama ‘Renascence’ at the Abrons Arts Center

New musical drama about Edna St. Vincent Millay, author of the poem “Renascence”, gloriously staged by the Transport Group to the passionate music by Carmel Dean; at the Abrons Arts Center until November 17, 2018

An inspiring musical performed by talented actors makes an exciting and enlightening debut at a welcoming Off-Off-Broadway Theater at the Abrons Arts Center. The book by Dick Scanlan about Edna St. Vincent Millay and her family is set to the lyrical and touching music score by Carmel Dean. The lyrics by Edna Millay are at the core of the musical convoluting the storyline and elevating its tensions at the same time.

With poetry being at the center at Millay’s family life, sisters and mother included, it brings refreshing vibes for the modern audience. And while the century that separates us from Millay’s time seems to lessen the public’s interest in poetry, the problems facing young poetess and women back then stay unchanged. The play, through its impressive acting and innovating staging, delivers a powerful message about a poetic talent and a young woman path to fame. Enjoy the story, the poetry, and the music!
