Beyond NYC: So Percussion at Caramoor in Katonah, NY
Refreshingly innovative and original in everything from the instruments to the rhythm and sounds at Caramoor in Katonah, NY on Friday, June 22, 2018, at 8 pm
This year Caramoor Summer Season lineup includes the highly imaginative group of musicians So Percussion. The band is a regular on the music scene and had taken part in every major music festival that is pioneering the new sounds. The band’s work expands the bounds of the familiar set of instruments and introduce unimaginable sources of sound with a masterly mix. So’s repertoire includes music by the 20th-century classical composers such as John Cage, Steve Reich, and Iannis Xenakis as well as the music written by the band members themselves and other modern creators.
The evening at Caramoor which falls on the longest daylight day of the year will be filled with the highly rewarding and entertaining music. Expect to be amused with each and every piece of the program! Click here for tickets.
All four band members Eric Cha-Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski and Jason Treating are professional percussionists, composers, and established educators. They lead and co-lead music and percussion programs at Princetown University and Bard College and are running a Percussion Summer Institute for college-age musicians which is in its 10th year. The group’s latest engagements included 2016 Lincoln Center Mostly Mozart Festival, multi-genre program at BAM Next Wave Festival in 2016 among many other.
The origin of So in the band’s name comes from Japanese character that means “to perform” or “to play an instrument” and “to be successful” and “to present the gods”. At the time of its founding it felt fitting and aspiring.
So Percussion collaborates extensively with the artists of multiple genres from classical musicians to electronic music groups to choreographers. As a review by NPR’s All Songs Considered host T. Huizenga notes that “the members of So Percussion will bang on almost anything”. Rubber bands, yarn strings, plant pots, soda cans and even a cactus are used to produce a colorful collage of sounds. The message to all of us is that the music can be made by very unconventional means and sound brilliant. The musicians’ ease with using everything and anything around them is unbounded. So as for the audience, its just a matter of listening and enjoying the performance. The concert will take place at the Venetian Theater.
A combination of top quality music performance and spectacular Caramoor gardens and grounds makes it an ideal place for a summer night out. At Caramoor, the visitors can enjoy architecture, history, art, horticulture, and music all in one place. Arrive early to have a chance to explore them all.
