Bronxville Women’s Club concludes its Midland Music Series with a highly anticipated piano recital by true legend, incomparable Jerome Lowenthal and his student Micah McLaurin on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at 7 pm

The legendary pianist Jerome Lowenthal is well known to Bronxville Women’s Club music lovers. Last year, Prof. Lowenthal shared the stage with two generations of students, Vassily Primakov and recent graduate of Juilliard Joey Chang. This time he brings another promising musician Micah McLaurin. McLaurin is a rising star of his generation who uses creative talent and fashion to challenge public perception of the 21st century “classical” musician.

Jerome Lowenthal, born in 1932, has been a prominent presence in the international piano world for more than sixty years.  In his youth a student of three legendary musicians- William Kapell, Eduard Steuermann and Alfred Cortot (with coachings from Arthur Rubinstein)-he has performed a voluminous and variegated repertoire that includes more than 63 different concerti, which he has performed with many of the world’s greatest conductors  His recordings, for RCA Victor, Columbia, Bridge and LPClassics, include both canonical repertoire by Beethoven, Chopin and Tchaikowsky and the music of our time by Rzewski, Rorem, and Rochberg, Chihara and Corigliano, Messiaen and Michael Brown.

Mr. Lowenthal has performed in a large number of chamber music festivals and collaborated in concerts with violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Nathaniel Rosen, and pianists Ronit Amir, Ursula Oppens, Carmel Lowenthal, Vassily Primakov and Michael Brown.

He has served on the juries of the Cliburn, Tchaikovsky, Rubinstein, Cleveland, and Leeds piano competitions, to name a few.  As a teacher at The Juilliard School since 1991, he has been mentor to many of the most internationally prominent of young pianists.  He regularly gives classes and performances at the festivals of Perugia, Amalfi, Eulzen, Beijing, and Piano Fest in the Hamptons.

2019 will mark his 50th summer at the Music Academy of the West.

Micah McLaurin has performed as soloist with major orchestras around the world including The Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Orquestra Filarmónica de Montevideo, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, South Carolina Philharmonic.

During the 2019-20 season, McLaurin debuts at the Key Biscayne Piano Festival, the Queens Symphony Orchestra, and the Spoleto Festival, where he will perform Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with conductor Jonathon Heyward. He returns this season for the Miami Piano Festival to play a solo recital of Liszt and Scriabin. In January 2020, he will join countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo as part of the Guggenheim’s Works and Process series. This season, he will also compete as a semi-finalist in the Premio Internazionale Antonio Mormone, performing two solo recitals in Milan.

Born in 1994 in Charleston, McLaurin studied with Marsha Gerber and Enrique Graf. He earned a Bachelor of Music at the Curtis Institute of Music, working with Robert McDonald and Gary Graffman and currently studies at The Juilliard School with Jerome Lowenthal and Veda Kaplinsky.

The Bronxville Women’s Club was founded in 1925 by Anna Lawrence Bisland, its first president. The present site, which is on the Westchester County Inventory of Historic Places from 1999 and the National List of Historic Places from 2007, was donated by Bisland to the Club in 1928. The Club offers a diverse selection of educational, cultural, civic, health and art programs. Midland Music Series is an ever-popular example of the exciting classical music events that take place at the Club.

Oxana Mikhailoff is an artistic director of Midland Concert Series  at the Bronxville Women’s Club in Bronxville, NY. Her artistic vision for the Midland Concert Series is driven by her mission to bring world-class musicians to perform in Westchester, NY.
