Nightlife in NYC: The Midwood Miracle by Deborah Karpel at Pangea Club

One-woman musical memoir tells a moving family story through the original compositions and traditional songs performed on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 7 pm

Lyrical, alluring and disarming, Deborah Karpel’s performance in The Midwood Miracle is a delicious treat and a familial story at the same time. Returning to Pangea supper-club in the heart of East Village in NYC the show on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 7 pm is a lovely way to spend a night in the city enjoying the music, the singing and a welcoming ambiance of the setting.

The show performed by Deborah Karpel with Michael Lewis Smith at the piano and directed by Aimee Todoroff tells a family story about a Jewish girl growing up in coal mining Appalachia, VA. Some details of the script are fictional, some are taken from family archives. Vivid elements of life in Appalachia, where Karpel’s mother grew up, are followed by the urban tales set in Brooklyn, NY. The scenes of how the character’s parents met, their ideals and a mixup of quirky twists are wonderfully delivered by Karpel’s amazing performance and singing. The original compositions co-written by Karpel with Ted Kociolek and Rachelle Garniez are perfectly mashed along with traditional Americana, western swing, operatic arias, improvised art songs, and Yiddish songs. Unique and intimate Brooklyn hangout spot for the classical music connoisseurs, Bargemusic is presenting a rising star Asiya Korepanova with a solo recital in the Masterworks Series program of Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, and Poulenc. Originally conceived as the “3B with a twist” concert program, the evening promises to offer the depth of interpretation which will be appreciated by both the consummate piano fans and those in search of new experiences.

This year the Summer Season program at Caramoor in Katonah, NY features a splendid roster of distinguished artists. Each week the Center brings about a delicious musical experience with classical and modern compositions and artistic approaches masterfully complementing each other. For the season Finale, Caramoor is presenting American treasure mezzo Susan Graham and Orchestra of St. Luke’s with  Nicolas McGegan conducting.

Graham, hailed by the Playbill as “powerhouse mezzo” who “dazzled the Metropolitan Opera audiences with performances” of a wide range of repertoire, will be singing selections from Handel’s Ariodante and Alicia in the first part of the program. Beyond NY: Opera Demon at Bard SummerScape

Rarely performed in the US opera by Anton Rubinstein is part of the SummerScape 2018 program on July 27 – August 5 at Bard College

Bard SummerScape is well known for its daring and adventurous streak offering to its audiences a delicious yet rarely performed music. Last year the program included A. Dvorak’s Dimitrij. This year it presents Anton Rubinstein’s opera Demon. Rubinstein’s work will complement the rest of the SummerScape program lineup celebrating the music of the The Mighty Five, the Russian composers of the late 19th century whose ambition was to write compositions rooted in Russian folk songs and traditional tonalities. The resulting trove of music literature enriched the sound palette and expanded the music language.

As for The Demon, with an all-Russian cast directed by Thaddeus Strassberger and accompanied by the American Symphony Orchestra with Mr. Botstein, current president of Bard College, conducting the opera will surely delight and amuse by its vibrant music and opulent choral arrangements. The performance are taking place at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.
